What Is Mailchimp and How to Generate an API Key for Forminator Pro

At Your Web Department, we often help clients connect their websites with tools that make marketing easier and more effective. One of the most popular platforms for email marketing is Mailchimp — and with the Forminator Pro plugin (which we use on the websites we build), integrating Mailchimp is quick and seamless.

What Is Mailchimp?

Mailchimp is an all-in-one marketing platform best known for its email marketing capabilities. It allows you to create and send email campaigns, manage subscriber lists, design automation workflows, and track performance. Whether you’re a small business or a growing organization, Mailchimp is a powerful tool to stay connected with your audience.

What Is a Mailchimp Audience?

In Mailchimp, your Audience is the main list where all your contacts — such as email subscribers, leads, and customers — are stored. You can think of it as your central contact database. Each contact can have associated tags, groups, and fields (like first name or company name), which help you segment and target your campaigns more effectively.

How Forminator Pro Feeds a Mailchimp Audience

When you create a form using the Forminator Pro plugin (such as a newsletter signup or contact form), you can configure it to send the submitted information directly to your Mailchimp Audience. For example, when someone fills out a form on your website, their name and email can be automatically added to your newsletter list in Mailchimp — no manual work required.

How to Set Up an Audience in Mailchimp

If you’re new to Mailchimp, you’ll need to make sure you have an Audience list ready to receive contacts from your website forms. Here’s how:

1. Log in to your Mailchimp account

Go to mailchimp.com and sign in.

2. Navigate to “Audience”

From the main dashboard, click the Audience icon in the left-hand menu.

3. Create or view your Audience

  • If you already have an Audience set up, you can use it.
  • To create a new one, click “Audience dashboard” > “Manage Audience” > “View audiences” > “Create Audience.”

4. Fill out the required information

Give your Audience a name (like “Newsletter Subscribers”), specify a default from email and name, and set up any necessary contact fields.

5. Customize fields and tags (optional)

You can add custom fields — like Company, Phone, or Birthday — depending on the type of data you want to collect via your form.
Now that your Audience is ready, you can connect it to a form in Forminator Pro.

Connecting Mailchimp to Forminator Pro

Forminator Pro is a WordPress plugin that makes it easy to create contact forms, polls, and quizzes. One of its standout features is the ability to integrate directly with services like Mailchimp — but to do that, you’ll need your Mailchimp API key.

How to Generate a Mailchimp API Key

1. Log in to your Mailchimp account

Go to mailchimp.com and sign in.

2. Navigate to your profile

Click your profile icon in the bottom left corner and choose Account & billing (or just “Account”).

3. Go to API Keys

Under the Extras menu, select API keys.

4. Create a key

Click the Create A Key button. Mailchimp will generate a long string of letters and numbers — that’s your unique API key.

5. Copy the key securely

Copy this key and paste it somewhere, like a text editor. You’ll need it in Forminator.

Integrating with Forminator Pro

1. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Forminator > Integrations.

2. Find Mailchimp and click Activate.

3. Paste the API key you copied earlier.

4. Click Connect, and Forminator will now be able to access your Mailchimp lists.

Once connected, you can assign Mailchimp actions to any form — for example, automatically adding users to your newsletter list when they fill out a contact form. Just map the fields from the form (like email, name, etc.) to the fields in your Mailchimp Audience — and you’re good to go!
